London: what actually goes wrong

The setups that repeat in London, what the law here really says, and what to do if the police turn up. Plain, unhysterical, written for adults.

Updated 3 Sep 2026

London is safe by the standards of a city its size, and what goes wrong is overwhelmingly financial. The exception is geographic: Soho and the streets around it late at night still run the oldest trick in the book, where a friendly stranger recommends a bar around the corner and the bill arrives with two doormen attached. Anything with no prices on the menu is not a bar, it is a method.

The law where you are standing

In England and Wales, selling and buying sex between adults is legal. Almost everything around it is not: running a brothel - which legally means two or more women working from the same premises - is an offence, as is kerb-crawling, soliciting in a public place, and controlling another person's work for gain. This is why independent, one-woman flats are the norm here and why anything advertised as a "house" is a legal risk to everyone in it. Paying for sex with someone who has been coerced is a strict-liability offence: not knowing is not a defence.

The setups that repeat

Almost nothing here is exotic. The same four or five scripts run in every city in Europe, and the only reason they still work is that men who feel embarrassed do not compare notes.

Before you go, in ninety seconds

If the police turn up

Two adults in a private room is not, by itself, a police matter in most of Europe. Stay still, stay polite, do not run and do not volunteer a story. You are allowed to say you would prefer to speak with a lawyer. Do not sign a statement in a language you do not read.

Money

That list is why every profile on Red Light District London goes through a face and body video review before it is published. It does not make an evening safe. It removes the one failure that causes most of the rest, and it removes it before you have to ask anybody to prove anything to you.
